The App

This simple, yet very useful, tool is a time-saver for translators. It takes away the hassle involved with daily, vital translation business tasks such as:

1. Weighted word count calculation
2. Deadline attainability
3. Target word estimation

The above three processes can take up as much as 30% of a translator's time when dealing with tedious, numerous or large incoming projects. The Translation101 Toolkit app will save you the time and stress, while simultaneously guaranteeing a safe, valid quick result with each run.

The app contains three tabs that handle the above-mentioned tasks; each tab provides simple, straightforward settings for fine-tuning your results per your project's requirements. Below you can find a detailed description of each tab.

Weighted Words Calculator (Tab 1)

Weighted word counts are quite handy since they depict the actual translation effort of a project in a single figure. In contrast, TM analysis logs contain multiple lines of numbers and percentages that, though useful, hinder the translator's ability to grasp the real work involved.

Hence, the existence of the Weighted Words Calculator tab. By inserting the word count per TM match category (as provided in a project's TM analysis log) along with your word rate, the app instantly calculates the weighted word count in a single figure.

Furthermore, the following features are also provided in this tab:

• Calculate a project's payment based on your word rate and weighted word count
• Apply custom TM match category rate schemes
• Save/Load custom TM match category rate schemes per client or project
• Create a report with a client's or project's weighted word count, payment details, TM match category rate scheme etc.

Deadline Validator (Tab 2)

As the most crucial aspect of a translation project, the deadline must always be met or calculated with utmost importance. Otherwise, the project's payment and your reputation as a professional translator are in jeopardy.

As a result, the Deadline Validator tab was created to help translators with the delicate, error-prone process of checking whether a deadline can be met, or calculate the best (and safest) deadline for a given volume of words.

By inserting a few project details such as start/end dates, project word count and your daily translation output, the app quickly, and safely, calculates the total number of words you can securely handle within the given project time period.

Additionally, in cases where a project's deadline doesn't allow you to handle the full volume of words, the app provides the following unique alternative information/suggestions:

• The number of words you can safely handle within the deadline
• The extension (in additional days) required to handle the full volume of words within the deadline
• The number of colleagues you need to work with (by setting up a team) to handle the full volume of words within the deadline

Target Words Estimator (Tab 3)

For cases where a project's files are non-editable, i.e. scanned PDFs, JPEGs, TIFFs etc., a translator usually needs to quickly estimate the potential target words that result from such files. This process can become quite frustrating since you need to take into consideration all types of variables such as number of pages, page layout complexity, subject field and so on.

The Target Words Estimator tab provides an easy, concise method of calculating the estimated target words of a project with scanned documents.

The only requirement is for you to provide the total number of pages and select the page layout that best fits the situation. The app will then instantly calculate the estimated target word count, giving you a useful metric on the project's overall volume.

The available page layout options are:

• Standard (i.e Sparse Text)
• Technical (i.e. Dense Text)
• Custom (provide your own average words per page)
